MP4 or WebM: choose the export for its destination
Compare codecs, compatibility and the actual playback path before choosing a container.
A file extension names a container, not every codec inside it. Our MP4 converter exports H.264 video with AAC audio; our WebM converter exports VP9 video with Opus audio. Choose according to the player or platform that must open the result, then test that path.
Compare the two outputs
| Output | Use it when | Check |
|---|---|---|
| H.264/AAC MP4 | You need a broadly supported deliverable or upload | The destination accepts this encoding and orientation |
| VP9/Opus WebM | Your browser delivery path supports WebM | Playback on the actual browsers and devices you serve |
| Original file | No conversion is needed | It already opens correctly and meets the destination’s requirements |
Convert once and verify
- Check the destination’s documented format requirements.
- Choose the matching converter and upload a supported source recording.
- Download the new file, open it outside the conversion page and play through a moving section.
- Test audio, orientation and seeking in the destination player before treating the conversion as approved.
Do not infer quality from the extension
Two MP4 files can look different because resolution, codec settings, bitrate and the source picture differ. Converting a weak recording to a new container does not restore detail. Repeated lossy conversions can make the picture worse; keep a source copy and convert from that copy when you need a new deliverable.
For a GIF, audio is removed and the format has different size and color constraints. Use a short, small GIF when animation is the purpose; use a video file when spoken explanation, efficient long playback or sound matters.
